Medicine Box DIY

I've seen this medicine box floating around the net for a while, and as is usually the case, I loved the design - not the price tag. One sunny Saturday I decided to take matters into my own hands, literally.  

Here's my first DIY tutorial! 

What you'll need:  

Tin with lid (I found one that was already red in color for $2.00 at a yard sale)

Rust-Oleum spray paint/primer (white gloss)

Sand paper

Blue painters tape

Bowl with equal parts vinegar and warm water

Rag

Wax paper

Permanent marker

Scissors

*Optional:  Printed cross logo

*Optional:  X-acto knife or Nail polish remover and Q-tip

Step 1:  Mix equal parts vinegar and warm water in small bowl. 

Step 2:  Dip rag in vinegar/water and use to clean tin. 

Step 3:  While tin is drying, draw (or outline) cross logo onto wax paper with permanent marker.

Step 4:  Apply blue painters tape to wax paper around the logo.

Step 5:  Slowly peel "decal" off wax paper and apply to tin in desired location. 

*Once applied, use additional tape to cover any exposed surface area on the tin*

Step 6:  Sand area to be painted, being careful not to tear/rip the tape decal.  

After sanding, wipe excess residue off with damp rag.

Step 7:  Spray light coat of paint onto tin. Allow 20 mins to dry before applying second and final coat.

Allow 1 hour to dry before handling.

Step 8:  Slowly remove tape once paint has fully dried.

Use caution when peeling back tape to avoid pulling up paint around corners. 

If painted edges are uneven, you can use an X-acto knife or nail polish remover and a Q-tip to *carefully* straighten lines or remove excess paint.

Step 9:  Fill tin with medicine and/or first aid supplies.

(My tin is about 14 inches tall and 10 inches in diameter, and I was able to fit all our vitamin bottles, hydrogen peroxide, cotton pads, band aids, feminine products and a variety of other small goodies inside it).

If we had a bigger bathroom, I'd display this since it's fairly aesthetically pleasing. However, my sock drawer is probably bigger than our current bathroom, so this baby is front and center in our linen closet for now.
