Green goodies

I think it's high time for an eco-friendly post, don't you?

Before our cross country move we had to make a lot of sacrifices:  sell the couch, donate the dishware, and edit the wardrobe. There was no greater loss, however, than saying goodbye to our dear friend Trader Joe's. How I loved strolling down its unconventional aisles stocked with outrageously low priced organic produce and how I laughed heartily to myself every time I saw one of its non-conformist employees brandishing the store's standard hawaiian buttondown attire and donning oversized ear plugs. Sigh.

I really shouldn't complain though, because if the eco-consciousness of Denver and New York were personified as men, Denver would be a dreadlock loving hippie wearing aged chaco sandals with a pocket full of patchouli oil hand cream and medical marijuana perscriptions.... and New York would be Donald Trump holding a tree shaped key chain.  Gosh, it's good to be in Colorado.

Anywho, here are some recently purchased green goodies I'm head over heels for and I think you should be too.

1.  Andalou Naturals Healthy Shine Sunflower & Citrus Styling Gel - $6
I'm always on the look out for wholesome after-shower hair products that actually work, which has been a mostly oxymoronic quest... until now.  This product isn't your typical gel, it feels more like a cream - which I love - and it smells divine.  My hair feels strong and hydrated (and I've got dry curly brittle hair peeps), my hands aren't sticky afterwards and my locks are frizz and crunch free for hours. This is also the only hair product I've ever applied twice in one day - not because the hold wears off (which it doesn't) but because it's so dang hydrating. I'm probably going to run through this in no time if I don't start moderating my use.

2.  Whole Foods 365 Everyday Citrus Grapefruit Shampoo & Conditioner - $2.99
I've only tried the Conditioner, but I'll definitely be going back for the shampoo once my little travel sized bottles are empty.  A little bit of this goes a long way, it's uber moisturizing, and you'll crave a piece of fruit every time you use it.  For the price and size it's a no brainer, especially because it's sold at Whole Foods - which decided to self-regulate all the personal care products it allows on their shelves. As of June 2011, all products sold at WF's  must now meet safety standards set forth by the USDA and NSF International, instead of just claiming its healthy for you. Think of all the time you'll save shopping in the beauty aisle since you won't have to sit and scrutinize all those ingredient labels!

3.  Aromatherapy Bottles - $0.99 - $2.99
Since olive oil bottles are typically monstrous in size, and I use it to wash and moisturize my face, I bought one of these to make storing olive oil in my bathroom a little more manageable. These containers come in either glass or BPA free plastic, varying sizes and have a wide assortment of tops to choose from: screw cap, spray nozzle, roll-on, etc.  Whatever your using it for, you're bound to find the perfect on for your needs.

4.  Preserve Toothbrush in Mail Back Pack - $2.99
I wasn't shopping for a new toothbrush, but as soon as I stumbled upon this gem, my dental equipment was suddenly ready for an upgrade. In most respects, it's your average toothbrush and cleans your teeth just as well as the next, but this baby is also made of 100% recycled #5 plastic (aka. yogurt cups), is BPA free AND - are you ready for it? - comes in it's own resealable mail back packaging so that the product can be recycled and given new life as a park bench, picnic table or boardwalk.  Check out Preserve's website.  They make a ton of other products for the bathroom and kitchen and do it with the same eco-conscious commitment.  Genuis!

5.  Heritage Rosewater (with atomizing mister spray) - $5
This is a new thing I'm trying since Colorado's lack of humidity has my skin constantly parched.  Before, when my skin needed extra lovin', I'd have to wipe off all my makeup, slather my face with moisturizer and then reapply my makeup again.  Now I just carry this around and spritz it on my face for an instant hydrating pick me up. Plus, I hear it's really good for setting mineral powder makeup! Sephora's even been pushing new products like this to their customers, so I figured they must be trying to exploit something good and I should give it a try, but using the cheaper organic stuff of course.  Duh.

6.  Seventh Generation Bathroom Tissue - $1.06
Everyone needs it. Everyone uses it. Might as well make it recycled and non-bleached.
Interesting Fact:  If every household replaced just ONE roll of normal TP with a roll of 100% recycled TP,  we could save almost half a million trees.  Seems like a reasonable request for a product that's literally going to be covered in *@#% anyway, right?  Right.

7.  Whole Foods 365 Everyday Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil - $6.99
The onset of colder weather and the drier climate of the west has my skin producing less oil these days. It also has me saying goodbye to my summer friend, Jojoba Oil, and hello to my good ol' EVOO (extra virgin olive oil).  Make sure you do your homework though, I just read some seriously disturbing info published by UC Davis regarding a wide spread olive oil scam.  Shudder.  This is what WF's has to say on the matter.

That's all for now. Hope you're having a fabulous weekend, my lovlies!
