The Plan: Depart at 6am from NY and drive to Chicago, arriving circa 7pm.
What Actually Happened: Left at 12pm from NY after playing Tetris with our luggage for hours and crashed for the night in Barkeyville, Pennsylvania (still 8.5 hours away from Chi-town).
Our adventures went something like this:
12pm - Hit the road a little grumpy, but savoring my last cup of half iced tea/ half lemonade DB drink. I will miss you Dairy Barn.
1pm - Make it over the Throggs Neck Bridge, only to sit in the worst traffic ever experienced in my New York dwelling days.
3pm - Pass 3 construction dudes chilling in the back of their truck in front of a few randomly placed traffic cones. This classifies as "GW Bridge Delays: Heavy Traffic - One Lane Closed"? Lame. At least I had Keri and a Rubix Cube. Anyone want to teach me the algorithms for completing the second half?
3:30pm - Exceed speed of 30 mph for first time since departure, and immediately see the need to pull over and readjust the plastic tarp covering our roof-bound mattresses.
3:45pm - Pull over to readjust tarps... again.
4pm - Our plastic tarp now looks like a slice of swiss cheese. The wind has shredded it to pieces, completely exposing our pillow top mattress set to the elements.
4:05pm - Dark ominous rain clouds begin to form.
4:15pm - Pull into the protection of a gas station overhang just in time for a brief downpour (thank you, Lord).
4:45pm - Mattresses rewrapped and secure. Thank goodness for duct tape.
8:30pm - Stick-on mustaches are applied to faces.
8:40pm - Mustache Competition begins. Who can keep it on the longest?
9pm - Funny sign sighting, "Buckle Up - Next Million Miles"
10:15pm - Pull into the first hotel we see in Barkeyville, PA - weird name - and Brandon charms the receptionist into giving us a deeply discounted room for the night. Rock on, hubby.
More stories from the road tomorrow! Given wifi availability, of course.
