On Saturday night, our church hosted their annual Talent Show and Sandwich Making Contest. I've usually participated (last year I showed off my mad towel origami skills), but this year I wanted to try my hand at the Sandwich contest - and the little non-conformist in me decided to forego the "sandwich" part all together and make a gnarly watermelon shark fruit salad instead!
I kinda just winged it, but for those who like a little more instruction, here's a step-by-step guide from the National Watermelon Promotion Board (...the national whaaa?)
Materials Needed:
1 oblong, seeded watermelon
Dry erase marker
Large knife
Smaller utility knife
Large spoon
Paring knife (you can use the tip of a vegetable peeler)
2 large marbles (I used grapes)
Toothpicks or wooden skewers
Swedish fish candies for garnish
(Optional: I used 1 box of blue Jell-O to make the water)
(Optional: I used 1 box of blue Jell-O to make the water)
Instructions:
- Wash and dry the watermelon.
- Cut off 1/3 of the watermelon at a diagonal angle.
- Use a large spoon to scoop out the watermelon flesh
- Stand the remaining 2/3 upright on your work surface and use a dry erase marker (or knife point) to draw the mouth line and eye sockets.
- Cut out the mouth. Trim back a ½" line of the green part of the rind for the teeth area.
- Cut out the teeth, using a smaller utility knife.
- Use melon baller to cut out the eye sockets that match the size of large marbles (or grapes). Then use a paring knife to trim the green area around the eyes. Insert marbles (or grapes).
- Use the carved out rind from the mouth to make the dorsal fin, shape as shown in the picture. Attach the fin using toothpicks.
- Fill the mouth with chopped fruit and swedish fish candy. (I filled the mouth with grapes, blueberries, watermelon and strawberries - yum!).
