Planning the great American road trip

A few posts back, I mentioned my family's idea to road trip cross country for my sister's west coast wedding, and it has quickly morphed from one of those that'd-be-so-cool-we-should-totally-do-it-but-probably-won't ideas into a full fledged oh-my-gosh-we're-actually-going-to-do-this plan. Needless to say, it's been surreal calling RV rental businesses, calculating costs, and plotting a course through landmarks and national parks (more on this topic soon).

Especially considering that my knowledge of RVing is limited to whatever I saw in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, RV (the movie), and Road Rules Season 7. Which if you think about it, does cover the basics: 1) don't volunteer for sewage disposal, 2) RV's are not off-road vehicles, and 3) choose your travel companions wisely...

Brandon and I did some tent camping in an RV park last fall, and boy, was that a treat. One of the RV dogs peed on our tent while we were sleeping inside, another dog stood outside our tent early in the morning and barked ferociously at us, and one of the RV's pull-out awnings fell down on an old lady wearing a nightgown who just happened to be standing beneath it (she was OK, but we were laughing long before we discovered that. Hmm, does that make me a bad person?).

This will be the epitome of the word, adventure.
